The HBK-4G Hunchback is a heavy-hitting fighting vehicle. Serving in
medium and assault lances of many regiments of the Succesor States, it
has earned a distinguished fighting record. Designed in early 2572, the
Hunchback continues as a popular vehicle both in House Lia and House
Kurita regiments. It is also used extensively by House Marik armed
The Hunchback is armed for short- to Medium-range combat. AT medium
ranges, its combined armament of Two Ichiba 2000 medium lasers and its
massive Tomodzuru Type 20 autocannon mount can rip through event the
heaviest armor. AT close ranges, the powerful auto-cannon and Diverse
Optics Type 10 small laser make it a very dangerous to attack the
From a defensive point of view, the Hunchback's armor fits its tonnage
class. The medium amount of armor carried plus the immense close-in
firepower ensure that it will overcome many other medium Mechs. Too
many MechWarriors, however, consider the Hunchback a match for heavy
Mechs, only to find that its armor just does not have the staying power
for extended combat with the behemoth heavy models.
The Mech's maneuverability and heat dispersion are also average for a
medium machine. Unfortunately its large Tomodzuru Type 20 auto-cannon
coupled with its Laser armament creates so much heat when fired that a
pilot must take great care to avoid heat build up over extended battles.
Heat build up is an issue that plagues all of the various models of
the Hunchback. It is the prudent MechWarrior who fires his weapon in
chain instead of all at once with this class of Mech.
The HBK-4G was one of the four Founders BattleMechs which featured a unique skin and 25% bonus.
The HBK-4G possess an impressive torso twist angle, up to 144° after the
Twist X Efficiency has been fully upgraded. This is very useful in
order to keep the torso mounted ballistic weapons on target while in the
middle of a brawl. Arm mounted energy hardpoints allow the -4G to track
faster targets accurately while a head mounted energy hard point
provides a last ditch weapon should all side torso and arm mounted
weapons be destroyed.
The greatest weakness of the HB-4G, like most Hunchbacks, is the
concentration of most of its firepower in one location. The right torso
is often targeted and due to its size, can be hit from both sides of the
'Mech. Once this location is destroyed, only the left arm and head
mounted weapons remain. Its large head hit box is another concern as it
can be hit relatively easily from the front and left side. Additionally,
the limited tonnage of the -4G means it will be difficult to mount
three ballistic weapons of any type other than Machine Guns or
Also, the Hunchback's maximum Engine limit is lower than most other Mediums.
During the Battle of Pike IV in 3012, Right's Medium Lance of Pasquesi's
Battalion led the assault on the city of Paramus. The two Hunchbacks
of the unit were first into the city, and began to tear apart the light
Mechs left as a screen by the 42nd Armored Lightning Regiment. As
Pasquesi's assault lances came charging into the central business
district, they saw the two Hunchbacks of Right's Lance in a fistfight
with two Crusaders. A third Crusade leaned drunkenly against a
skyscraper, its center torso shot through. Before Pasquesi's heavy
mechs could come to the aid of the Hunchbacks, the Mechs had eliminated
both their adversaries. One Crusader had punched-in head section, and
the right leg of the other had been ripped off with point-blank
During the attack on New Ivaarsen in October 3021, Hous Kurita's Fifth
Galedon Regulars charged their assault and medium lances against the
Davion defense position outside the fortified city of Twin Peaks.
Organized as city-busters for this campaign, the Fifth Galedon
unfortunately lacked enough Mechs with long-range projectile weapons, as
the Kurita commander never expected that House Davion could set up an
effective defense outside the city.
The Hunchback and other Mechs of the Kurita assault lances were ordered
to force their way into Twin Peaks, but the charge was short-lived.
Peppered with Davion's long-range missile and auto-cannon fire, many
Galedon Mechs were disabled before getting halfway to the city gates.
Unable to return effective fire, first one, than many Mechwarriors
turned their Mechs around and charged for the nearest cover. The
defender held Twin Peaks until substantial Davion reinforcements
arrived, then forced the Fifth Galedon Regulars to retreat.
Also called the Swayback due to its less-exaggerated torso, the 4P
Hunchback is modified to carry only energy weapons. The Autocannon/20
was replaced with six additional Medium Lasers. In order to handle the
incredibly high heat load, the 'Mech has twenty three heat sinks. While
this may seem like a downgrade of the design, the combined firepower of
all eight Medium Lasers can do twice as much damage as the Autocannon
A full 9 energy weapon hardpoints allow the HBK-4P to mount the most
energy weapons of any available 'Mech. A wide torso twist angle allows
the -4P to keep its numerous torso mounted energy weapons on target in a
close range fight.
In almost all configurations, heat will be an issue with this 'Mech.
Even Double Heat Sinks will struggle to handle the heat buildup of the
HBK-4P. Like most Hunchbacks, the loss of the right torso will result in
the majority of its weapons being lost. Another weakness it shares with
other Hunchbacks is a large head hit box, capable of being hit even
from its left side.
The 4SP variant replaces the Autocannon with two SRM-6 launchers. These
missile launchers provide the 'Mech with a great deal of damage
capability at close range, but they do not have the same raw power as
the original Autocannon/20. The 'Mech also has four Medium Lasers as
When compared to the [[Hunchback HBK-4J], which shares a similar
hardpoint loadout, the HBK-4SP splits it missile hardpoint among both
torsos and moves nearly all of its energy weapons to both arms. This
removes the glaring weakness of having most weapons mounted on one side
of the 'Mech. It also means it can more effectively track fast targets
with arm mounted lasers. Like all Hunchbacks, the -4SP possesses
impressive torso twist range. After fully upgrading the Twist X
Efficiency, the -4SP can in fact fire all four arm mounted weapons
directly behind it relative to its legs.
While the HBK-4SP does not concentrate its weapons in the right torso
like most Hunchbacks, it does still share a large head hit box. To some
degree though, the jutting shape of its side torsos provide more
protection from its left side than other Hunchbacks.
One of many variants, the 4H Hunchback is a modification of the design
that uses a lighter Autocannon/10 and adds an additional two Medium
Lasers. This modification increases the Hunchback's long range striking
capability at the expense of raw firepower.
The HBK-4H exchanged two ballistic Hardpoints in the right torso for two
energy hardpoints. This is arguably a favorably hardpoint set up since
the limited tonnage of the Hunchback means it can more easily carry a
large number of lasers than it could autocannons. Like all Hunchbacks,
it possesses an impressive torso twist range which allows it to more
easily keep its torso mounted weapons on target.
Like most Hunchbacks, once the right torso of the HBK-4H is destroyed,
so is most of its firepower. Additionally, the large jutting cockpit
means its relatively easy to hit, even from its left side.
This variant changes the 'Mech's focus from short range combat to fire
support by removing the Auto-cannon/20 and replacing it with two LRM-10
launchers and three additional Medium Lasers. This variant can act as a
bodyguard 'Mech for fire support lances without degrading the mission of
those lances because of its mix of LRMs and Medium Lasers.
A wide torso twist angle allows the HBK-4P to keep its torso mounted
weapons on target at close range. Six energy hardpoints allow it to
carry a large number of small and medium lasers. Unlike the -4SP, the
-4J has 20 missile tubes, which allow it to launch up to 20 missiles in a
The HBK-4J is often compared unfavorably to the Hunchback HBK-4SP. Both
share the same speed and maneuverability and a similar number of energy
and missile hardpoints. However, the -4SP spreads it hardoints out even
among both arms and torsos. A loss of the right torso, which essentially
disarms the -4J, would only remove half the firepower on the -4SP.
Additionally, having most of the energy hardpoints mounted in the torso
of the -4J means it is more difficult to track fast targets unlike the
-4SP which houses almost all of its energy hardpoints in its arms.
